Soccer World Cup Finals 2010
I’ve started a new thread on the 2010 World Cup because, with all respect to our Limey contributors on the “England to get through or not thread”, there will be a lot more going on in South Africa come June 2010.
Take for example yesterday’s declaration by the South African Police Chief that he has been praying “that the Americans don't make the second round". What! Apparently he is worried that President Obama could fly in if the US make it to the knockout stage.
I didn’t know Obama was the least bit interested in soccer let alone had any intentions to get involved in the tournament by flying to South Africa.
I thought he was a basketball dude!

One dignitary that certainly won’t be going to South Africa this year is the President of Ireland. The lovely Mary McAleese won’t be going for the simple reason that Ireland were cheated out of a place at the World Cup Finals by an illegal handball on the part of Thierry Henry of France. All of Europe saw this on TV and Thierry admitted the offense, yet FIFA stood by and did nothing because they wanted France, a previous winner, to go through to the finals rather than Ireland.

Sorry folks but neither the USA nor Ireland is going to win the 2010 football World Cup (even if Ireland had mad it to the finals).
I think the five time winners Brazil should be joint favorites with the European Cup holders Spain.
For an outside bet I’d go for Germany who were unbeaten in the qualifying rounds and are a big-tournament-team.
