Bad Ref, no problem
Yahoo! Sports is reporting that controversial USA – Slovenia referee Koman Coulibaly will be facing an “expedited performance review” from FIFA, and may be excluded from the rest of the World Cup. This seems like the best thing for everybody.

In case you’re just joining us, Coulibaly is responsible for the worst injustice ever. Like Jim Joyce before him, he blew the deciding call in the biggest game of his life. But unlike Joyce, linguistic and cultural barriers will prevent him garnering forgiveness courtesy of a tearful mea culpa.

Yahoo obtained their scoop from a source ,who said the disallowed goal wasn’t the only aspect of Coulibaly’s officiating that FIFA found lacking. As anyone who watched the match will tell you, it was extremely physical to the point of being out of control.

On Maurice Edu’s non-goal in the 88th minute, for example, poor Michael Bradley was pretty much hugged by a Slovenian defender. (see next post)

FIFA will now assess Coulibaly’s performance, and will almost certainly keep him from refereeing any more matches in the World Cup. However, this doesn’t mean that he won’t have one more opportunity to break the heart of another football-loving nation (yes, we love it now, and it loves U.S.). Coulibaly may find himself barred from refereeing another match, but according to FIFA, he might be eligible to be a line judge in the knockout round. Which may be OK for some, as long as he is not the Ref.

Soccer’s governing body would be hard pressed not to keep this guy as far away from the field as possible. A repeat performance by the 'man of a thousand shrugs' is, hopefully, not going to happen.

We will see what the always arrogant FIFA will do. I am sure they could care less how many of us bloody Americans complain, especially since we are still 'newbies' in accepting Soccer as a nation.
