Mayweather vs. Ortiz
I am not really excited about this fight. All the hype, build up and 24/7 coverage have done the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do and just wore me out. I don't think it will be much of a fight and in reality, I'm looking forward to seeing Morales and Canelo on the undercard more than the Main Event.

That was the biggest waste of money in the history of boxing. Absolutely horrible. I don't remember the last time I paid money for a Floyd fight and it was actually worth it. I'm never ordering a Mayweather fight ever again... If he fights Pacquiao I'll watch, but that's a Pacquiao fight not a Mayweather fight.

I was ready to give Mayweather a degree of credit for facing Ortiz. Ortiz at least is more natural at 147 than JMM ever will be. I also think Ortiz is a good fighter who came off a legit title victory over another good fighter. However, I thought about it more leading into the fight, and this was just as much of a mismatch as Floyd's fight against Marquez was. The guy will not challenge himself against anyone close to him in terms of talent/skill unless he loses or grows a set.

Yeah this was obviously a huge mismatch in skill, hand speed and technical mastery. I think it actually might have been fun to watch a Floyd clinic if it hadn't ended so ghastly. Did you hear Manny Steward when Floyd started to unleash his cheap shots? The Larry Merchant interview was funny as hell too.

Wow, where to start...
Joe Cortez should have been more attentive to the fighters while the round was still going on. If he was saying something to a judge about the point, he could have waited until the round was over.
Victor Ortiz should have been ready to resume fighting (PROTECT YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES!!!). However, I give him a little bit of a pass IF he thought the fight was not going to resume until Cortez went back towards them to restart it. If that is the case, I lay some of Ortiz's share of the blame on Cortez.
And then there is Floyd. I wish that I could judge this situation, for what it is on it's own, but unfortunately I cannot (Floyd is to blame for this). I've said before how talented Floyd is as a boxer, but he still lives up to being a scumbag as a person. I think it was sad that Ortiz headbutted Floyd out of frustration, but I think it's more pathetic what Floyd ended up doing. The guy has proven for almost ten years now that he doesn't want to do anything that challenges his precious undefeated record. I believe he took the easy way out in that fight. Do I think Ortiz was going to win if Floyd didn't KO him when he did? No, I think Floyd would have possibly got a late round stoppage anyway. However, I believe he saw an opportunity to just get it over with asap, and he took it. I saw that he made a comment about how everyone wanted a KO, so he gave them one. Really Floyd? You're goiing to get cocky about that KO??
Here's what is going to happen. Floyd may rematch Ortiz, and he will win again. After the fight, he will talk about how it doesn't matter what happened in the first fight because he just showed everyone Ortiz can't win. He will be asked about Pacquiao (who will likely beat Marquez), and he will say that Manny doesn't want to fight him. He will also bring up the drug testing, and remind everyone again how he's the greatest of all time.
I honestly don't want to see Mayweather vs Pacquiao. I don't think Manny needs Floyd for his legacy. He's had a more hall of fame worthy career than Floyd has. Is he the more talented & skilled fighter? It's kind of hard to say because they are so different. If he isn't though, I don't think it's by much. He doesn't have as good of a record, by the numbers, as Floyd does. The big difference though is who they fought. Say what you will about some of Manny's past few opponents, but how many people would have picked him to beat any of them before we saw him crush De La Hoya? So I just hope that Manny pulls a Kostya Tszyu and takes the high road against the arrogant prick. The difference being that Zab Judah actually wanted to fight Tszyu, while Mayweather just wants to run away while screaming how much of a coward Manny is.
Sorry for the long rant, Mayweather just annoys me that much.

The thing about those cheap shots that pissed me off so much was that they came while both guys had apparently taken a break and decided to show signs of good will. Then right when Ortiz stepped back, pow. It was premeditated for Floyd that he was going to pretend to make a peaceful gesture then whack him when he wasn't ready.

I once saw a fight were the boxers came out at the opening bell to touch gloves and one fighter decided to forego the formal niceties and juft clocked him. Fight over. In the end he got the win and so did Floyd. I feel like these were pretty similar knock outs. Two guys who thought they'd take a little short cut and hit a guy when they knew he wasn't fighting. Legal, yes but I just can't imagine the truly great fighters using this cheap tactic in a title fight.

You're last line there says it all...Floyd isn't a truly great fighter.

I don't know if I think it was premeditated, but I would not put it past Mayweather. I think Floyd was focused, cunning & clever enough to have seen everything that was going on (Cortez walking away from the fighters, Ortiz not paying attention), and he then decided to throw the punches.
When I was watching the replays of the KO, I don't remember if I saw a shot of Ortiz that showed his face after the left hook. I remember the one from behind, and I swear his body language made it look like he was stunned but also realized what Floyd had just done to him. Then the right hand that followed definitely put Ortiz out for the count. IF it were true that Ortiz wasn't buzzed too bad from that hook, which is possible since Floyd isn't a crushing puncher at 147, it would have been the greatest thing ever to see Ortiz dodge the right hand and crush Mayweather with a KO shot. I guess I'll just have to dream about that one happening.

If you saw him after the fight he had some swelling and bruising under the right eye for sure. My friend, the most ridiculously biased Floyd fan on the planet, was like see he kicked his ass, his eye is all swollen. I said yeah after two cheap shots, to which he replied that one was a left and the other was a straight right. But after ten minutes of convincing him that both punches landed on the same spot, the replay confirmed it. Those were some pretty accurate shots, both hit almost the exact same spot under the right eye.

Don't quote me on this, but I think Manny said a few fights back that he didn't want to go on much longer. If he was being honest about that, then he might only have 2 or 3 fights left. I'm not entirely sure who his opponents will be if he doesn't fight Mayweather. The only fight that I can think of being a solid possibility is Amir Khan. However, that might not happen is Khan wants to get some fights in at 147 first. I'm going to guess that Manny might not fight past 2012.
